Herb like Black cohosh found more effective than HRT for Menopause

Health Bulletin, March 2004 Reports Herb Beats HRT for Menopause

In a study of 704 menopausal patients, the journal Clinician [Doctor] Reviews, vol. 10, 2000, 49% reported complete relief from their hot flashes, headaches, vertigo and tinnitus symptoms while taking the Remifemin brand preparation of the herb black cohosh. 37% had significant but not complete relief.

Physicians in the trial stated that 72% of patients found that the herb was more effective than taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The journal noted that studies in animals indicated that black cohosh could increase the effects of some blood pressure reducing drugs, although this has not been confirmed in human tests. It also stated that in Germany, where the preparation has been used for 40 years, no adverse effects have been reported. However one study showed that 7% of those taking it had experienced short-term stomach upset. There have been no tests of the effects of overdosing.

DETAILS: Bullish as the above appears, we do not endorse medical treatments, but merely report scientific findings. Consult your physician.
